Dentaladhäsiv refers to dental adhesives, which are materials used to bond restorative materials to tooth structure. These adhesives are crucial in modern dentistry, enabling minimally invasive treatments and improving the aesthetics and longevity of dental restorations. The development of dental adhesives has progressed significantly over the decades, moving from simple bonding agents to complex multi-step systems.

The primary function of dental adhesives is to create a strong and durable bond between the tooth surface, typically dentin and enamel, and restorative materials like composite resins, ceramics, and even metal alloys. This bonding process is achieved through a combination of mechanical retention and micromechanical interlocking, as well as chemical adhesion. The tooth surface is usually treated with an etchant, often phosphoric acid, to create microscopic pores and roughen the surface, enhancing adhesion. A primer may then be applied to improve wettability and penetration into the etched surface. Finally, the adhesive resin is applied, which infiltrates the etched surface and hardens, forming a bridge between the tooth and the restorative material.

Dental adhesives are broadly classified into different generations and types, including etch-and-rinse adhesives (which involve etching and rinsing the tooth surface before adhesive application) and self-etch adhesives (which combine etching and priming into a single step). The choice of adhesive system depends on various factors, such as the type of restorative material being used, the clinical situation, and the clinician's preference. Proper application technique is paramount to achieving optimal bond strength and preventing post-operative sensitivity or restoration failure.
