DengueRDT

DengueRDT refers to a Dengue Rapid Diagnostic Test. These tests are diagnostic tools designed to detect the presence of dengue virus infection in individuals. Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness that can cause a range of symptoms, from mild flu-like illness to severe, life-threatening complications.

Rapid diagnostic tests for dengue typically detect either viral antigens, such as the non-structural protein 1 (NS1) antigen, or antibodies produced by the body in response to the infection, namely IgM and IgG antibodies. NS1 antigen tests are usually most effective during the early stages of infection, within the first few days after symptom onset. Antibody tests become positive later in the course of the illness, with IgM appearing a few days after symptom onset and IgG appearing even later, often indicating a past infection or a later stage of a current infection.

DengueRDTs offer several advantages, including their speed, ease of use, and ability to be performed at the point of care, such as in clinics or remote areas where laboratory facilities may be limited. This allows for quicker diagnosis and, consequently, more timely patient management. However, their sensitivity and specificity can vary depending on the specific test and the stage of infection. Therefore, results from DengueRDTs are often interpreted in conjunction with clinical signs and symptoms, and sometimes confirmed with more sensitive laboratory tests.
