Demarkaation

Demarkaation is the process of establishing and marking the physical and legal boundaries between territories, jurisdictions, or functional zones. The term, a variant spelling of demarcation, is used in some regions and texts to emphasize the act of setting limits. It encompasses cartographic delineation as well as the deployment of markers, fences, walls, or other boundary installations, and it is often codified in treaties, statutes, or administrative regulations.

Demarkaation can be geographic, such as international borders, administrative, such as city or district boundaries, or functional, such as zoning of land use, fisheries zones, or airspace. The methods include surveying, mapping, GPS and remote sensing, as well as legal instruments that define rights and responsibilities. A typical process combines negotiation, technical surveys, and the placement of markers, followed by recognition in law and, if needed, enforcement frameworks.

Challenges include natural boundary changes, ambiguous terrain, enclaves and exclaves, conflicting legal claims, and costs of maintenance.
