Deklaratiiviset

Deklaratiiviset is a Finnish term used to describe things expressed as declarations or statements about information. The word is formed from the root deklar- (declare) with the adjectival suffix -atiivinen and the plural or collective form -iset. In Finnish discourse the term appears in linguistics as well as in computer science, indicating related but distinct ideas about stating or specifying.

In linguistics, declarative sentences are those that convey information or assertions rather than asking questions or issuing commands. They are the most common type of sentence in many languages. Finnish declarative sentences typically use the indicative mood, and their primary function is to state facts, descriptions, or explanations. The sentences end with a period in written language. They are contrasted with interrogative sentences, which pose questions, and imperative sentences, which give commands or requests.

In computer science and information technology, declarative refers to a programming paradigm or approach that emphasizes describing the desired result rather than the steps to achieve it. This contrasts with imperative programming, which focuses on explicit instructions and control flow. Declarative languages and tools include SQL for database queries, Prolog for logic programming, and many functional languages, as well as infrastructure-as-code configurations such as Kubernetes manifests or Terraform configurations. The appeal of declarative approaches lies in higher abstraction, easier reasoning about outcomes, and often simpler maintenance, though they can sacrifice low-level control and performance predictability in some contexts.
