Dehelised

Dehelised are a type of traditional Estonian dwelling, primarily found in rural areas. These structures are characterized by their simple, often rectangular, design and are typically constructed from wood, reflecting the abundance of timber in Estonia. Historically, dehelised served as a multi-functional space for families, housing both people and livestock under a single roof. This arrangement provided warmth and protection, particularly during the harsh Estonian winters.

The layout of a dehelised often included a living area, a stable, and sometimes a storage space. The living quarters were usually situated at one end, while the animal stalls occupied the other. A central hearth or stove was a crucial element for heating and cooking. The roof was typically pitched, often covered with thatch or wooden shingles, designed to shed snow and rain effectively. Over time, as living standards evolved, the separate function of living spaces from animal enclosures became more common, leading to modifications or the construction of separate buildings. While many original dehelised have been modernized or replaced, some examples still exist, serving as a reminder of Estonia's architectural heritage and agricultural past.
