Definierning
Definierning is the act or process of defining a term or concept. In several Germanic languages, variants such as definíëring (Dutch) or definering (Norwegian) point to the same basic idea: producing a precise description that conveys meaning and boundaries. In English, the more common label is definition, but the notion of definierning underpins how terms are clarified in philosophy, linguistics, logic, and information science.

Types and methods. Several approaches to definierning are recognized:
- Lexical definitions describe common usage, often akin to dictionary entries.
- Ostensive definitions use examples or demonstrations to convey meaning.

- Precising definitions aim to reduce vagueness or ambiguity in a given context.
- In science and mathematics, operational or definitional conventions specify terms by observable procedures or axioms.
