The term is Finnish in origin, combining defender with suojaus (protection). In practice, it denotes a holistic approach that emphasizes resilience, redundancy, and rapid restoration of function.

The core idea is defense in depth: multiple layers of defense, monitoring, and the ability to detect and respond to incidents before they cause significant harm. Key elements include threat modeling, asset classification, access control, encryption, monitoring and logging, incident response planning, and regular testing and training. The approach also stresses adaptability to evolving risks and the importance of governance and continuous improvement.

Defendersuojaus is applied in several domains. In information security, it encompasses technical controls such as MFA, endpoint protection, network segmentation, backups, and recovery playbooks. In physical security, it covers barriers, surveillance, personnel, visitor management, and emergency procedures.
