Defeceren

Defeceren is the Dutch verb for the act of defecating, the process by which feces are excreted from the digestive tract through the anus. The related noun form is defecatie. In medical contexts, the act is commonly described as defecation. The English term defecation shares the same Latin roots.

Physiology and mechanism are typically described as the final stage of digestion. Stool is stored in the rectum, where its distension triggers sensory signals. The internal anal sphincter relaxes through the rectoanal inhibitory reflex, while the external anal sphincter can be voluntarily controlled. Coordinated contraction of the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles increases intra-abdominal pressure to aid expulsion, and normal defecation results in stool passing through the anal canal with minimal straining.

Usage and register vary. Defeceren is standard in formal or clinical Dutch; informally, people more often use terms like poepen or ontlasten. In medical writing, defecation is a precise term, while discussions of symptoms may describe constipation, diarrhea, fecal incontinence, or stool characteristics.

Health considerations and hygiene are common topics in relation to defeceren. Normal frequency and consistency vary widely among individuals, but healthy stool is typically soft and well formed with little or no blood. Alarm signs include persistent constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain, unintended weight loss, or fecal bleeding, which warrant medical evaluation. Lifestyle factors such as adequate hydration, dietary fiber, and physical activity can support regular, comfortable defecation.
