DeVriesia

DeVriesia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Orchidaceae. The genus was described in 1969 by Dutch botanist C. L. Withner. DeVriesia orchids are native to the Andes Mountains of South America, particularly in Ecuador and Peru. They are typically found in humid cloud forests at high elevations.

Species within DeVriesia are characterized by their epiphytic growth habit, meaning they grow on other plants, usually trees, for support. Their pseudobulbs are often small and ovoid, and they bear one or two apical leaves that are typically leathery and oblong. The inflorescences are usually pendulous or arching, bearing a few to many flowers. The flowers themselves are often delicate and can vary in color, commonly featuring shades of white, green, or yellow, often with intricate lip structures.

The genus DeVriesia is named in honor of the Dutch orchid enthusiast and collector, Jan de Vries. These orchids are considered to be of horticultural interest but are not widely cultivated due to their specific habitat requirements and the challenges associated with their propagation. Research into the genus continues to expand our understanding of orchid diversity in the Andean region.
