Datacenterfaciliteter are the physical facilities that house an organization's data center equipment. They provide the building, electrical power and cooling infrastructure, security, and network connectivity required to run servers, storage, and networking gear. The facilities are designed to meet reliability, security, and environmental requirements for continuous operation.

Key components include electrical power systems (utility feed, uninterruptible power supplies, distribution units, backup generators, and fuel storage) and cooling systems (air or liquid cooling, CRAC units, chillers, and containment strategies such as hot aisle/cold aisle). Physical infrastructure such as raised floors, racks, cable management, and patch panels, together with network interconnects (fiber pathways, cross-connects, and carrier access), form the backbone. Security is addressed through perimeter protection, access control systems, surveillance, and structured disaster planning. Fire protection and environmental controls guard against hazards and equipment failure.

Datacenter facilities vary in design and use. Enterprise data centers are owned by a single organization; colocation facilities host multiple tenants; hyperscale data centers serve large-scale cloud providers; edge data centers are smaller facilities closer to end users to reduce latency. Architectural choices balance redundancy, scalability, and cost, with common approaches including tiers or fault-tolerant configurations and N or 2N redundancy.

Operations focus on reliability, capacity planning, monitoring, and maintenance. Metrics such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) measure energy efficiency. Standards and frameworks, such as data center Tier classifications and cybersecurity and physical security guidelines, guide design and operations. Compliance with applicable laws, including data protection and environmental regulations, is also considered.

Location and environmental considerations include access to reliable electricity, fiber connectivity, and favorable climate; proximity to customers and cooling resources; potential risk from natural hazards; and incentives for energy efficiency or renewables. Sustainable datacenter facilities increasingly emphasize energy efficiency, water management, and reducing the environmental footprint.
