Dandere

Dandere is a character archetype in Japanese media, primarily anime and manga, describing a character who is shy, quiet, and socially reserved in most situations, but who can become affectionate and talkative when in a trusting relationship. The term is a portmanteau of danmari (silence, quiet) and deredere (affectionate or loving). It is one of many "dere" archetypes used to categorize portrayals of romance and personality.

Characteristics: Dandere characters tend to be soft-spoken, speak in short or minimal sentences, avoid attention, and blend into the background. They often display anxious or withdrawn behavior in public, may prefer simple or solitary activities, and may have difficulty initiating conversations. The warmth of their personality typically emerges only with a close friend, crush, or partner, sometimes through hesitant dialogue, blushing, or shy smiles. Their communication style can be nonverbal or indirect, relying on actions rather than words.

In media, dandere characters are commonly found in romantic comedies and school-set stories. They are often paired with a more outgoing 'dere' character who helps draw them out. They are distinct from other dere types (for example, kuudere, who are emotionally cool, or deredere, who are openly affectionate) but can transition into a dere state when comfortable.

Variations and limitations: Some interpretations link dandere with social anxiety or introversion, but it is a fictional trope, not a clinical diagnosis. Critics note that tropes can reinforce stereotypes and oversimplify real personalities.
