Dampwiping

Dampwiping is a cleaning method in which a cloth, sponge, or disposable wipe that is moistened with a cleaning solution is used to wipe surfaces. The dampness allows the cloth to lift dirt and microbial material more effectively than a dry wipe, while limiting splatter. It is used in residential, commercial, and healthcare settings as part of routine cleaning and, when combined with appropriate disinfectants, infection control practices.

In practice, dampwiping involves selecting an appropriate cleaning agent, preparing a suitable dampness level, and applying systematic passes to the surface. Common tools include microfiber cloths or disposable wipes. The cloth should be moistened but not dripping, and should be changed or laundered when dirty or contaminated. Work from areas that are cleanest to dirtiest, and follow a top-to-bottom or front-to-back pattern to minimize recontamination. For disinfection, surfaces must remain wet for the contact time specified by the product label.

Safety considerations include using gloves or other PPE as needed, avoiding mixing incompatible cleaners, ensuring ventilation, and testing surface compatibility before use. Dampwiping can reduce stubborn soils and microbial load, but it has limitations: it may not remove certain residues without pre-cleaning, excessive moisture can damage some surfaces, and it should be part of a broader cleaning and disinfection plan rather than a sole method.
