Damballa

Damballa is a prominent Vodou loa, often considered the serpent god and primordial creator of all life. He is depicted as a great white serpent, sometimes with a golden crown, and is associated with the sky, water, and the rainbow. Damballa is revered for his wisdom, his healing powers, and his role as a benevolent father figure. He is seen as an elder loa, ancient and slow-moving, embodying patience and tranquility.

In Vodou ceremonies, Damballa is often invoked through dances that mimic the slithering of a snake. His followers may exhibit serpentine movements and speak in a slow, hissing voice. He is typically offered white foods such as milk, eggs, and rice, symbolizing purity and his connection to the celestial realm. Unlike some other Vodou deities, Damballa is not generally associated with fierce or vengeful actions; instead, his influence is sought for peace, prosperity, and spiritual enlightenment. He is also linked to the concept of the "rainbow bridge" that connects the earthly and spiritual worlds. His wife, Ayida-Weddo, is also a serpent spirit, often depicted as a rainbow, and they are frequently honored together.
