Dacryocystectomy

Dacryocystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the lacrimal sac. The lacrimal sac is a small reservoir located at the inner corner of the eye socket, responsible for collecting tears from the lacrimal canaliculi and draining them into the nasal cavity via the nasolacrimal duct. Removal of this sac is typically performed when it is diseased or significantly obstructed and cannot be adequately treated by other methods.

The most common indication for dacryocystectomy is chronic dacryocystitis, an infection of the lacrimal sac. This condition can cause pain, swelling, redness, and discharge from the inner corner of the eye. Persistent obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct leading to recurrent infections or the formation of a mucocele (a cyst filled with mucus) can also necessitate the surgery. In rare cases, tumors within or pressing on the lacrimal sac may require its removal.

The procedure can be performed either externally, through an incision made on the side of the nose below the eyelid, or endoscopically, using a small camera inserted through the nasal passage. The surgeon carefully dissects and removes the lacrimal sac. Post-operative care usually involves pain management and monitoring for signs of infection. While dacryocystectomy resolves the issue with the lacrimal sac, it may lead to a slight increase in tear overflow, especially in windy or cold conditions, as the natural drainage pathway is altered. However, for patients suffering from chronic infection or obstruction, it offers significant relief.
