Dachkantgläser, also known as roof prism binoculars, are a type of optical instrument that uses a specific optical design to produce an upright and correctly oriented image. Unlike Porro prism binoculars, which have a distinctive Z-shaped body, roof prism binoculars have a more compact and straight-line construction. This design is achieved by employing a roof prism system, which involves two prisms that meet at a right angle, forming a "roof" shape. Light enters the objective lens, passes through the roof prism, and then through the eyepiece.

The key advantage of the roof prism design is its compactness and durability. The prisms are housed within a sealed body, making them less susceptible to dust and moisture. This also results in a sleeker and more ergonomic form factor, which can be easier to hold and handle. However, the optical path in a roof prism system is more complex, requiring precise alignment and often necessitating phase-correction coatings to maintain image quality. Without these coatings, the light waves can interfere with each other, leading to reduced contrast and resolution.

Dachkantgläser are widely used for a variety of applications, including birdwatching, hunting, and general observation, where portability and a robust design are important. While early roof prism binoculars often lagged behind their Porro prism counterparts in optical performance, modern advancements in lens coatings and prism manufacturing have significantly closed this gap, making high-quality roof prism binoculars readily available.
