Founded in Germany in 2006 by Claudia Helming and Michael Pahl, it quickly grew to become one of the largest platforms of its kind in Europe. The website connected sellers, often independent artisans and small businesses, with buyers looking for unique items. The product range was extensive, encompassing fashion, accessories, home decor, toys, and gifts. Buyers could often request customization, allowing for personalized creations.

DaWanda operated in several European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Austria. The platform aimed to foster a community of creators and consumers, emphasizing creativity and individuality. It provided tools for sellers to manage their shops, list products, and communicate with customers. For buyers, it offered a curated selection of items that stood apart from mass-produced goods. The company also organized physical events and workshops to further engage its community.

In 2018, DaWanda announced its acquisition by Etsy, another major online marketplace for handmade and vintage items. The integration aimed to combine the strengths of both platforms, with Etsy subsequently absorbing DaWanda's seller base and customer operations. The DaWanda brand itself was phased out following the acquisition.
