DSLtekniikkaa, or Digital Subscriber Line technology, refers to a family of technologies used to transmit digital data over conventional telephone lines. It allows for high-speed internet access by utilizing frequencies on copper telephone wires that are not used for voice calls. This enables simultaneous use of the internet and telephone service on the same line.

There are several variations of DSL, with ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) being the most common for residential use. ADSL offers higher download speeds than upload speeds, which is suitable for typical internet activities like browsing and streaming. Other forms include SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line), which provides equal upload and download speeds, often favored by businesses, and VDSL (Very High-speed Digital Subscriber Line), which offers significantly faster speeds over shorter distances.

The effectiveness of DSL technology is dependent on the distance from the user's premises to the telephone company's central office or local exchange. The farther away the user is, the slower the connection speed will be due to signal degradation over copper lines. DSL is a mature technology that played a significant role in the early expansion of broadband internet access. While newer technologies like fiber optics offer superior performance, DSL remains a viable option in many areas.
