DPPs

DPPs, or Dual-Purpose Pistols, are firearms designed to function as both handguns and rifles, often through the use of modular components or interchangeable parts. These weapons combine the portability and ease of use of a pistol with the firepower and range capabilities of a rifle, making them versatile for various tactical and law enforcement applications.

The concept of a DPP typically involves a pistol grip stock that can be attached to or detached from the firearm’s frame, transforming it into a carbine or rifle configuration. Some DPPs also feature adjustable stocks, collapsible or telescoping designs, or even detachable barrels to further enhance adaptability. This modularity allows users to switch between configurations quickly, depending on the situation at hand.

DPPs are commonly associated with semi-automatic pistols, particularly those chambered in intermediate cartridges like the 9×19mm Parabellum or .45 ACP, which are also used in many carbine platforms. Examples of firearms that incorporate DPP principles include the HK USP with its detachable stock, the Sig Sauer P320 with its modular grip system, and the Glock 17 Gen 5 with its optional stock attachment. Some military and law enforcement agencies have adopted DPPs for their ability to provide a balance between concealability and firepower.

While DPPs offer practical advantages, they also introduce considerations such as increased weight when in rifle configuration and potential complexity in maintenance due to additional moving parts. Their design is particularly favored in scenarios where versatility is prioritized, such as close-quarters combat, urban operations, or situations where rapid reconfiguration is beneficial.
