DNA synthesis refers to the creation of DNA molecules. This process can occur naturally within living organisms, a phenomenon known as replication, or it can be artificially induced in a laboratory setting, often called chemical synthesis. Natural DNA replication is a fundamental biological process essential for cell division and the inheritance of genetic information. It involves complex enzymatic machinery that accurately copies the existing DNA strand to produce two identical daughter molecules.

Artificial DNA synthesis, on the other hand, allows scientists to create custom DNA sequences. This capability has revolutionized molecular biology and has numerous applications, including gene cloning, DNA sequencing, and the development of gene therapies. Chemical synthesis typically employs methods like solid-phase synthesis, where nucleotides are added one by one to a growing DNA chain attached to a solid support. These synthetic DNA molecules, often referred to as oligonucleotides, can range in length from a few bases to hundreds or even thousands of bases.
