Solidphase refers to the state of matter in which a material has a definite shape and volume. In this phase, particles are closely packed in a fixed arrangement and vibrate around lattice points, producing low compressibility relative to liquids and gases. Solids can be crystalline, with long-range order, or amorphous, lacking that order.

Properties of solids include high density and rigidity. Crystalline solids exhibit anisotropic mechanical properties due to their orderly lattice; amorphous solids are more isotropic. Solids can melt into liquids or sublimate into gases, and some transitions occur via deposition, depending on temperature and pressure.

Phase diagrams describe the conditions under which solids exist or transform. At the solidus line a solid becomes unstable with rising temperature; beyond the melting point it becomes a liquid. Some materials sublimate directly from solid to gas at low pressures.

Solid-state chemistry studies reactions in the solid phase, often diffusion-controlled and requiring high temperatures. Solid-phase synthesis and solid-supported chemistry use solid materials as reaction media or scaffolds, as in peptide synthesis or catalysis. Solid-phase extraction uses sorbents to isolate analytes.

Characterization techniques include X-ray diffraction for structure, electron microscopy for microstructure, and thermal analysis for phase transitions. Material properties depend on crystal structure, defects, and particle size; nanomaterials show distinct behaviors due to large surface-to-volume ratios. Common solids include metals, ceramics, and polymers; ice, diamonds, and glass are well-known examples.
