A DJ controller is a piece of hardware that emulates the function of a traditional DJ setup, typically consisting of two turntables and a mixer, but in a more compact and integrated form. These controllers connect to a computer, which runs DJ software. The controller's knobs, buttons, and faders send MIDI messages or other control signals to the software, allowing the DJ to manipulate the music being played. This enables actions such as beatmatching, cueing tracks, adjusting EQ, applying effects, and crossfading between songs.

DJ controllers vary in complexity and features. Entry-level models often provide basic playback control, jog wheels for track searching and scratching, and simple mixing controls. More advanced controllers can include built-in sound cards, multiple decks for mixing more than two tracks simultaneously, performance pads for triggering samples or hot cues, and sophisticated effects sections. Some controllers are designed to be highly integrated with specific DJ software, offering a seamless user experience.

The primary advantage of using a DJ controller is its portability and the vast capabilities offered by modern DJ software. DJs can carry their entire music library on a laptop and perform with a single piece of hardware. This has made DJing more accessible to aspiring artists and has become the dominant form of DJing in many contexts. While some purists still favor traditional vinyl setups, the flexibility and affordability of DJ controllers have revolutionized the way music is mixed and performed live.
