Cánula

Cánula is a medical device typically made of plastic or metal, characterized by its hollow, cylindrical shape. It is primarily used to introduce or remove substances from the body, or to maintain patency of a passage. The term "cánula" is often used interchangeably with "cannula" in English medical contexts, originating from the Latin word for a reed.

There are various types of cánulas designed for specific medical purposes. For example, a nasal cánula is used to deliver supplemental oxygen to patients with respiratory issues. An intravenous cánula, commonly known as an IV line, is inserted into a vein to administer fluids, medications, or blood. Tracheal cánulas, such as tracheostomy tubes, are placed in the trachea to facilitate breathing in individuals with airway obstruction or who require long-term mechanical ventilation. Other specialized cánulas exist for procedures like liposuction, angiography, and laparoscopy.
