Cylindriciteit

Cylindriciteit is a geometrical concept that describes how closely a shape conforms to a perfect cylinder. It is often used in metrology and engineering to assess the quality of manufactured parts, such as shafts, pins, and rolls. A perfectly cylindrical object has a constant radius along its entire length and no deviation from a straight axis.

The deviation from a perfect cylinder is typically measured in terms of cylindricity error. This error can arise from various manufacturing processes, including turning, grinding, and extrusion. Factors that contribute to cylindricity error include tool wear, machine inaccuracies, thermal expansion, and residual stresses within the material.

Several methods are employed to measure cylindricity. Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) are commonly used for precise measurements. These machines use probes to capture multiple points on the surface of the object, and sophisticated software then analyzes these points to determine the degree of cylindricity. Optical profilometers and laser scanners can also be utilized for non-contact measurement of cylindricity.

The acceptable level of cylindricity error depends on the application. For critical components where precise fit and function are required, very tight cylindricity tolerances are necessary. In less demanding applications, a wider tolerance might be acceptable. Maintaining good cylindricity is crucial for ensuring proper bearing performance, sealing effectiveness, and overall component reliability.
