Cyclomoteurs

A cyclomoteur, often shortened to cyclomoteur, is a type of low-powered, two-wheeled vehicle that bridges the gap between a bicycle and a motorcycle. Typically, it is equipped with a small engine, usually between 30cc and 50cc in displacement, and has pedals, although the pedals are often not intended for significant propulsion. The engine provides the primary means of power, while the pedals can assist during starting or climbing hills, or serve as a legal requirement in some jurisdictions to classify the vehicle as a cyclomoteur rather than a moped or motorcycle.

The design of a cyclomoteur generally features a frame that resembles that of a bicycle, with handlebars for steering and a seat for the rider. Unlike a true motorcycle, cyclomoteurs are not built for high speeds or long-distance travel. Their top speed is usually limited by design and regulation, often to around 30 to 45 kilometers per hour. They are commonly used for short-distance urban transportation, commuting, or recreational purposes.

The legal definition and classification of a cyclomoteur can vary significantly between countries and even regions within a country. These variations often pertain to engine size, maximum speed, the presence and function of pedals, and licensing or registration requirements. In some places, operating a cyclomoteur may require a specific license or permit, while in others, it may be treated similarly to a bicycle with added engine power. The term itself is most commonly used in French-speaking countries, though similar vehicles exist globally under different names like mopeds or light motorcycles.
