Cyanoramphus

Cyanoramphus is a genus of parakeets native to New Zealand. These birds are commonly known as New Zealand parakeets or kaka. The genus currently contains seven species, though some classifications may vary. Most Cyanoramphus species are characterized by their predominantly green plumage, often with splashes of red or yellow on their heads or bodies. They are typically medium-sized parakeets with long tails.

These birds inhabit a range of environments, from dense forests to more open scrubland and even islands. Their diet generally consists of seeds, fruits, buds, and insects. Cyanoramphus species are known for their intelligence and adaptability. However, many species within this genus face significant threats to their survival, primarily due to habitat loss, introduced predators such as stoats and rats, and historical exploitation.

Conservation efforts are underway for several Cyanoramphus species, including captive breeding programs and predator control initiatives. The kākāriki, or smaller parakeets within the genus, are particularly vulnerable. The future of some of these unique New Zealand birds remains uncertain, highlighting the importance of ongoing conservation work.
