In Romanian, curte can refer to an enclosed outdoor space surrounding a building (a courtyard) and, in a broader sense, to the household or administration of a ruler, i.e., the royal court. In legal language, curte appears in compounds and phrases referring to courts, such as curtea de apel or the high judicial body known as the Înalta Curte de Casație și Justiție. The word is common in historical and contemporary references to architecture, governance, and law in Romanian, and it is often found in expressions like curtea domnească or curtea regală. The etymology traces to Latin roots associated with enclosure or dwelling.

In Portuguese, curte is less prominently used as a standalone noun and is primarily recognized as a verb form. Curte is the third-person present indicative of curtir, meaning to enjoy or like, as in ele/ela curte música, reflecting casual, colloquial speech. The standard nouns for related ideas in Portuguese are different: for a courtyard, pátio or quintal; for a court of law, tribunal or corte. Thus, in Portuguese, curte is typically encountered in informal communication rather than as a general term for a courtyard or a judicial institution.
