Curtainsided

Curtainsided, or curtain sider, refers to a type of road freight trailer whose sides are made from flexible fabric curtains rather than rigid panels. The curtains hang within a framework of vertical posts and upper tracks, and can be drawn open along the length to allow side loading and unloading. When closed, the curtains form a weather-resistant envelope around the cargo; rear doors remain for end access in many designs.

Construction and operation: A curtainsided trailer has a rigid underframe and axles with a series of vertical posts supporting the curtain system. The fabric is typically reinforced vinyl or polyester and is secured at intervals with fasteners, lacing, or tensioning rods. The curtains can be opened quickly to provide full-length access for forklifts and palletized loads. Although the sides are flexible, the trailer usually preserves load-restraining points and may include interior blocking or straps to secure payloads.

Advantages and uses: Curtain sides enable fast side loading and unloading, reducing dock-door requirements and allowing access from the side for pallets of standard sizes. They are commonly used for palletized freight, consumer goods, and regional distribution where frequent on/off-loading occurs. They offer a lighter alternative to rigid-sided trailers and can be more cost-effective for certain fleets and routes.

Disadvantages and considerations: The fabric curtains are subject to wear and weather exposure, and can be damaged by sharp edges or improper handling. Load security must account for curtain movement, and curtains may require regular maintenance and replacement. In some conditions, curtain-sided trailers provide less protection against theft and weather when fully open.

Terminology: In Europe, the common term is curtain sider or curtain-side trailer; in North America, curtainside trailer or curtainsider is also used.
