They are characterized by their thin, circular shape and are designed to cut, grind, or shape materials such as metal, stone, and concrete. The effectiveness and application of a csiszolólemez depend heavily on its composition, grit size, and bonding agent.

These discs are typically made from abrasive grains, such as aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, or zirconia alumina, held together by a resinoid or vitrified bond. The choice of abrasive grain influences the material the disc can effectively cut or grind. For instance, aluminum oxide is common for ferrous metals, while silicon carbide is often used for non-ferrous metals and non-metallic materials like stone and glass.
