Typically goods arrive at inbound docks, are inspected and sorted for final destinations, and are then loaded onto outbound vehicles with little to no intermediate storage. Temporary staging may occur to balance inbound and outbound flows, but the emphasis remains on speed and accuracy. Operations rely on real-time information, dock-door scheduling, and often an integrated warehouse management system (WMS) and transportation management system (TMS).

CrossDockingZentren can be configured for flow-through or consolidation/deconsolidation purposes. Flow-through centers move goods directly through; consolidation centers combine several inbound shipments into full truckloads ready for outbound distribution, while deconsolidation centers break down mixed loads into smaller shipments for regional networks.
