Cratefor

Cratefor is a proposed open standard and software platform intended to describe, monitor, and manage standardized shipping crates across logistics networks. It provides a data model, an API, and reference implementations to capture crate attributes, track conditions, and integrate with warehouse management and transportation systems.

The project originated from a consortium of logistics and automation companies in the early 2020s. The open specification was published in 2021, with ongoing governance by the Cratefor Alliance. It aims to enable interoperability among carriers, shippers, equipment suppliers, and infrastructure operators, supported by community-driven extensions for sensing and security.

Core to Cratefor is a crate descriptor that includes a unique crate_id, external and internal dimensions, weight, contents classification, hazard status, and environmental requirements. It supports sensor telemetry (temperature, humidity, shock), seal integrity, and audit trails. Data can be serialized as JSON or CBOR and transmitted via MQTT or REST, with adapters for ERP and WMS systems. The standard seeks compatibility with existing intermodal practices and aligns where possible with ISO container and pallet conventions.

Adopters have piloted Cratefor in freight forwarding, manufacturing, and third-party logistics to improve traceability and incident response. Reported benefits include reduced misplacement, faster discrepancy resolution, and simplified customs reporting. Challenges include achieving broad industry adoption, coordinating multiple standards, and ensuring secure data sharing across partners.
