Subcategories include faithful covers, which aim to reproduce the original closely, and reinterpretations or rearrangements that alter style or genre. A remake refers to a new recording of a song by the original artist and is distinct from a cover by another artist.

Historically, cover versions have played a key role in popular music, allowing artists to pay tribute, keep songs in circulation, and introduce them to new audiences.
