Covenbased

Covenbased is an adjective describing practices, organization, or philosophy centered on a coven, a formal group of witches who worship, study, and perform magic together. The term is primarily used in modern witchcraft and Wiccan discourse to distinguish group-centered practice from solitary witchcraft.

Origin and usage: The word coven originates from a traditional term for a gathering of witches. Covenbased emerged as a descriptive label in contemporary communities to indicate the central role of a coven in ritual life. It is commonly applied to Wiccan traditions that explicitly organize adherents into covens, though some non-Wiccan traditions also use coven structures. Covens are usually led by a presiding couple or a high-priest/ess and may include ritual circles, initiations, and a system of degrees or statuses.

Practice: In covenbased paths, adherents meet regularly for rites such as Sabbats (seasonal ceremonies) and Esbats (moon rites).
