Counterdescription is a descriptive stance or statement that actively counters or qualifies an initial description of a person, object, or phenomenon by highlighting features, contexts, or interpretations that the original description glossed over or misrepresented. It is not simply a negation, but an attempt to broaden understanding by presenting an alternative reading or set of attributes. In scholarly and analytical contexts, counterdescription serves to counter essentialist or reductive labels and to encourage nuance in classification and narration.

In qualitative research, practitioners may provide counterdescriptions as part of triangulation, framing, or reflexive analysis. In media and cultural studies, counterdescriptions counter stereotypes by foregrounding overlooked dimensions or dissenting voices. In knowledge organization, a counterdescription may accompany a primary description to flag ambiguity, context-dependence, or evolving meanings; in description logics or ontologies, it can function as a supplementary classification that informs uncertainty or partiality.

For instance, describing a city district as "quiet and residential" might be accompanied by a counterdescription that notes its vibrant street life after dusk, diverse social spaces, and ongoing gentrification. In art history, a counterdescription of a painting labeled as "academic" might emphasize its experimental brushwork or political subtext that challenges the original genre tag.
