Corduroys

Corduroys are a type of fabric and garment known for their distinctive ribbed texture. The fabric itself is a type of twill-woven cotton, often blended with wool or other materials, characterized by vertical ridges or "wales" that run parallel to the selvage (the finished edge of the fabric). These ridges give corduroy its signature tactile and visual appeal, ranging from fine to coarse depending on the number of wales per inch.

Originally developed in England during the 18th century, corduroy was designed to be durable and warm, making it popular among working-class individuals. The name "corduroy" is believed to derive from the French word *corduroy*, which itself comes from *corde du Roy* ("cord of the king"), referencing the rough, cord-like texture of early versions of the fabric. Over time, corduroy evolved into a versatile material used for both casual and formal attire.

Corduroy garments are commonly worn in cooler weather due to their insulating properties. It is frequently used for pants, jackets, skirts, and even accessories like hats and gloves. The fabric’s texture and durability have made it a staple in fashion, particularly in autumn and winter collections. Corduroy pants, in particular, have seen resurgences in popularity across different decades, often associated with retro or vintage styles.

The fabric can be finished in various ways, including brushing to enhance its texture or treating it to reduce wrinkles. Corduroy comes in a wide range of colors, though brown and green were historically the most common. Today, it is available in nearly any hue, from classic neutrals to bold, modern shades. While traditionally associated with practicality, corduroy has also been embraced in high fashion, demonstrating its enduring versatility and timeless appeal.
