CopperIIIII is a hypothetical oxidation state for the element copper. Copper commonly exhibits oxidation states of +1 (cuprous) and +2 (cupric). In solution, Cu(I) is typically colorless or pale blue, while Cu(II) is characteristically blue or green. Higher oxidation states for copper are generally unstable and difficult to isolate, often existing only under extreme conditions or as transient intermediates in chemical reactions.

The stabilization of a +5 oxidation state for any transition metal is exceptionally rare and would require very specific and powerful ligands. Such a species would likely be highly oxidizing and reactive. Theoretical studies suggest that extremely electronegative ligands might be capable of stabilizing such a high oxidation state, but experimental confirmation and characterization of copper in the +5 oxidation state remain elusive. The electronic configuration of copper is [Ar] 3d10 4s1. To reach a +5 oxidation state, copper would need to lose all five of its valence electrons, meaning the 4s electron and four of the 3d electrons. This would result in a highly charged and electron-deficient copper ion. The existence of copper in such a state is primarily a topic of theoretical chemistry and computational modeling rather than established experimental fact.
