Coordinatefree refers to methods, definitions, and reasoning that do not rely on a fixed coordinate system. In mathematics and related fields, a coordinatefree approach emphasizes intrinsic structures—such as vector spaces, manifolds, inner products, and linear maps—so that statements remain valid under changes of coordinates or bases. This perspective highlights invariants and often clarifies geometric or physical meaning.

In linear algebra, many concepts are described without coordinates by using maps between spaces and bilinear forms. For example, a linear operator is viewed as a map V -> V, and its properties (such as being invertible or having a certain invariant subspace) are coordinateindependent. Norms and angles can be defined via inner products without reference to a particular basis. The determinant, rank, and eigenvalues are intrinsic properties of linear transformations, even though their matrix representations depend on a chosen basis.

In geometry and analysis, coordinatefree language is standard. Tangent spaces on manifolds, differential forms, and exterior derivatives are defined without coordinates, enabling statements that hold in any chart. Limitations can include greater abstractness and, in some practical computations, a loss of explicitness or computational efficiency when coordinates are needed for implementation.
