Coolock

Coolock is a suburban area situated in the East Dublin region of Ireland. It lies within the boundaries of the Dublin 8 postal district, located to the north-east of the city centre and bordered by the suburb of Swords to the north and the urban development of Crumlin to the south. The area derives its name from the Irish phrase "Coill an tSliabh," meaning “wood of the hill”, reflecting the historically wooded terrain that once covered the site.

Historically Coolock was a small agricultural community that expanded significantly after the late twentieth‑century growth of Dublin’s commuter belt. The development of the M50 motorway and the adjacent rail infrastructure has accelerated residential and commercial expansion. Census data from the 2011 Irish Population Census recorded a population of approximately 8,000 residents, with a median age of 34 years. The demographic profile is relatively diverse, with a mixture of Irish and immigrant communities, many of whom are employed in nearby Dublin employment hubs.

The area is served by several key transport links. Dublin Bus routes 47 and 49 provide frequent connections to the city centre and Swords railway station, offering commuter services to the national rail network. The Coolock area also enjoys proximity to the Naval Road Cycleway, part of Dublin’s extensive greenway system, which promotes alternative transportation and recreation. Additionally, the newly refurbished Coolock Community Centre offers a range of social and cultural programmes for residents.

Notable landmarks include the Coolock Park, a local green space hosting community sports and events, and the historically significant Catholic church of St. Paul's, which has been a focal point of local religious life for more than a century. Despite its rapid urbanisation, Coolock retains a strong sense of community identity, bolstered by active local associations and regular neighbourhood festivals.
