Cookiesbasert is a term used in web development, particularly in Norwegian usage, to describe approaches that rely on HTTP cookies to store small data pieces on a user’s device. These cookies enable servers to recognize a user across multiple requests, maintain session state, and tailor content based on prior interactions. While cookies can support various features, they also raise privacy and security considerations.

Common uses of cookiesbasert systems include session authentication, where a session identifier stored in a cookie lets a user remain logged in as they navigate a site; personalization by remembering language or preferences; and shopping cart continuity. Analytics and advertising deployments often use cookiesbasert tracking to associate activity with a unique, if pseudonymous, user.

Technically, a cookie is a name-value pair created by a server and stored by the browser. The server sends a Set-Cookie header with attributes such as Expires or Max-Age, Domain, Path, Secure, HttpOnly, and SameSite. On subsequent requests, the browser includes the cookie in the Cookie header. Different cookies can be used for different purposes, including session cookies that expire when the browser closes, and persistent cookies that last for a defined period.

Cookiesbasert solutions intersect with privacy and security rules. In many jurisdictions, non-essential cookies require user consent under frameworks such as the EU's GDPR and ePrivacy law. Technically, Secure cookies are transmitted over HTTPS, HttpOnly cookies are not accessible to JavaScript, and SameSite helps mitigate CSRF risks. Organizations should minimize data stored in cookies and provide user controls.

Recently, there has been movement away from third-party cookies and toward first-party cookies and server-side session management. Developers are encouraged to use stricter SameSite settings, keep cookies small, and employ additional layers of authentication tokens when appropriate. Transparency about cookie use and clear consent flows remain central to cookiesbasert deployments.
