Contract-to-hire, also known as temp-to-perm, is a staffing arrangement in which an individual is hired initially as a contractor for a defined period with the possibility of becoming a permanent employee at the end of the term. The model is used to allow both the employer and the worker to assess fit before committing to a permanent hire.

Typically, the agreement spans a fixed duration, often ranging from three to twelve months. During this term, the worker is evaluated on performance, skills, and cultural fit. At the end of the contract, the employer may offer permanent employment to the worker, subject to mutual agreement and business needs. Compensation during the term is usually paid through the staffing firm or the client, depending on the setup, and benefits may be limited for the contractor or provided by the staffing firm. If the contract ends without conversion, the worker may need to seek other opportunities.

Advantages include reduced hiring risk for employers, a clearer demonstration of capability for the worker, and a structured path to permanent employment. Drawbacks include potential job insecurity for the worker, limited or no immediate benefits, and the possibility that conversion is not guaranteed even after a successful term. Legal and contractual considerations emphasize clear conversion criteria, term length, compensation terms, and compliance with labor laws and classification rules.
