Contaminatedie is a term used in semiconductor manufacturing to describe a silicon die that bears foreign materials or impurities acquired during fabrication, assembly, or handling. It denotes contamination at the die level, which can occur despite cleanroom controls and may affect subsequent electrical performance or reliability.

Common contaminants include inorganic ionic residues from cleaning solvents, metallic ions from plating processes, organic residues from photoresists or lubricants, particulate matter from the environment, and moisture trapped at interfaces. Contamination can be surface-bound or embedded within oxide or passivation layers.

Detection relies on optical inspection, scanning electron microscopy, and analytical techniques such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy or secondary ion mass spectrometry, often performed on representative samples or failed dies. Electrical tests and burn-in can reveal latent defects caused by contamination.

Impacts on devices range from increased leakage currents and threshold voltage shifts to premature failure and reduced yield. In extreme cases, a contaminated die may be functionally unusable after packaging.

Prevention focuses on robust contamination control: cleanroom practices, personnel and tool cleanliness, validated cleaning sequences, thorough wafer and die cleaning, drying protocols, and minimization of contact during handling. Process controls, in-line inspection, and traceability help identify contamination sources and isolate affected lots.
