Container transport is the intermodal movement of goods using standardized containers that can be transferred between ships, trucks, trains, and aircraft with minimal handling. The system relies on uniform container dimensions, robust chassis and handling equipment, and integrated terminal operations to allow seamless transfer across multiple modes of transport.

Standardization and sizes have been central to container transport. The modern system emerged in the mid-20th century with standardized steel containers and rapidly expanded global trade. The most common unit is the twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), with forty-foot containers (FEU) also widely used. High-cube containers, at about 9.6 feet tall, provide additional volume. Specialized containers include refrigerated (reefer) units for temperature-controlled cargo and tanks for liquids or gases. Containers are identified and tracked through standardized markings and codes, such as ISO 6346, and are subject to construction and safety regulations, including CSC plates. In 2016, the International Maritime Organization mandated verification of container gross weight prior to loading.

Operations and infrastructure rely on container ships, container terminals, and intermodal equipment such as gantry cranes, reach stackers, and chassis. Efficient container transport hinges on terminal throughput, intermodal connectivity, and reliable scheduling. Security and safety regulations address packaging, labeling, hazardous goods, and weight verification, while industry pressures focus on reducing dwell times, improving visibility, and mitigating congestion.

Impact and trends: container transport underpins global trade by lowering handling costs and enabling economies of scale. It supports intermodal logistics networks that move goods efficiently across continents, while ongoing efforts aim to reduce environmental impacts through fleet modernization, slow steaming, and modal shifts to rail and short-sea shipping.
