Conival

Conival is a mountain in Scotland, located in the Assynt region of the Northwest Highlands within the historical county of Sutherland. It lies to the northwest of Ullapool and near the village of Lochinver. The summit reaches approximately 825 metres (2,706 feet) above sea level and is classified as a Munro, marking it as one of Scotland’s higher and more notable peaks. Conival sits on a northwest–southeast ridge that also includes Canisp, forming a prominent feature of the Assynt landscape.

Geology and terrain are characteristic of the Northwest Highlands, with hard, erosion-resistant rock shaping a rugged, rocky ascent. The upper slopes are rough and often exposed, and vegetation is sparse on the higher parts, giving way to bare rock near the summit.

Access and routes: Common ascent routes begin from the northwest, traversing rough terrain, or from the northeast via a high saddle before climbing the final slopes. Many hikers combine a climb of Conival with a traverse of Canisp or pair it with other nearby peaks for a longer hill day. The summit affords broad views across the surrounding Highlands and, on clear days, out to the western coastline.

Conival is part of the Northwest Highlands landscape and falls under Scotland’s public access rights, allowing responsible walking and climbing with appropriate regard for the environment.
