The term is a neologism used in discussions of social dynamics and nonverbal communication to describe how people manage social impressions through gesture. Researchers note that conformatiesturing can occur in person or through digital interfaces, where emoji reactions, reaction icons, and proposed gestures substitute for spoken assent.

Mechanisms include impression management, social reward, and sanction avoidance. When participants match expected gestures, others infer conformity, which can reduce uncertainty, facilitate cooperation, or reinforce status hierarchies. Conformatiesturing can also serve as a rapid, low-cost signal in tense or ambiguous situations.

Common contexts include workplace meetings, classroom discussions, political rallies, and cross-cultural interactions. In online environments, it appears as agreement signals in chat, video platforms, or social media, where users align with prevailing viewpoints through visible cues.

Critics argue that excessive conformatiestering may mask dissent, pressure individuals to conform, or obscure power imbalances. Cultural variation affects which gestures are interpreted as conformist, complicating cross-cultural communication.
