Confessionale

Confessionale is an Italian term meaning confessional. In religious contexts, it most often refers to the confessional, the small enclosure or booth in a church where a penitent confesses sins to a priest as part of the sacrament of reconciliation or confession.

Etymology and sense. The word derives from Latin confessionalis, from confessio (confession). In church architecture and practice, a confessionale is the space designated for hear­ing confessions. It can be a fixed wooden box built into a nave wall with a grille or lattice separating the penitent from the priest, sometimes arranged as two side-by-side compartments. Some examples are freestanding, mobile, or placed behind a curtain, with kneelers or cushions to aid the penitent during the rite.

Architectural variations. Confessionals appear in a range of styles, from medieval and Baroque country churches to modern adaptations. Traditional setups emphasize privacy through screens, curtains, or screens, while later designs may adopt more open or semi-private configurations in response to changing pastoral practices.

Usage and relevance. The confessional remains a recognizable symbol of the Catholic practice of penance in many parts of the world, though its prominence has declined in some regions where parishes favor more open or generalized styles of confession. The term confessionale, used in Italian, is primarily tied to this ecclesiastical space, but it can also appear in liturgical texts or descriptions of confessional practice.
