ConEmu

ConEmu is a Windows console emulator and terminal emulator that provides an enhanced interface for running and managing multiple console applications. It acts as a single, tabbed window that can host several shells and programs, offering features designed to improve navigation, organization, and aesthetics in a Windows development environment.

Key features include a tabbed interface, horizontal and vertical split panes, and a Quake-style drop-down mode. Users can customize the appearance with different fonts, colors, and transparency, and configure keyboard and mouse interactions for efficient workflow. ConEmu supports a wide range of shells and environments, such as cmd.exe, PowerShell, Git Bash (MSYS2), Cygwin/MSYS, Windows Subsystem for Linux (via wsl.exe), and various SSH clients.

Under the hood, ConEmuSeparate presents a UI front-end that launches and manages console processes through a backend component (ConEmuC). This architecture lets ConEmu provide features like seamless copy/paste, scrolling, and unified window management while the actual console applications run in dedicated console hosts. ConEmu can be used as a standalone tool or as part of the ConEmu-Maximus5 package, which bundles Far Manager, though ConEmu remains functional independently.

ConEs provides a flexible environment for workflows that require multiple shells or tasks, enabling centralized control of several consoles within a single window. It has been maintained since the early 2010s and has a community of users and contributors who contribute to its development and integration with other Windows tools.
