The modern coffeehouse originated in the Ottoman Empire, with early establishments called kahvehane dating to the 15th or 16th century in cities such as Constantinople. From the 17th century they spread to Europe, fueling literate and commercial life. They were sometimes nicknamed penny universities because a single cup of coffee provided access to conversation and news. Over time, coffeehouses became centers of sociability, ideas, music, and the exchange of information.

Typical offerings include coffee prepared in various styles (espresso, drip, Turkish coffee), tea, and a selection of pastries, sandwiches, or light meals. Atmospheres range from quiet study spaces to lively social hubs. In modern settings many coffeehouses provide seating, background music, and free wifi, and some function as informal coworking spaces or community venues.

Culturally, coffeehouses have influenced public life by serving as venues for discussion, debate, and networking. They have been associated with political discourse and the spread of newspapers and literary culture. Across history governments sometimes restricted or censored them, recognizing their influence on public opinion.

Today, the term varies by region. European cafés emphasize espresso and pastries; in the Middle East and Anatolia kahvehane traditions persist; in North America and Asia, chain and specialty cafes dominate, reflecting different consumer cultures. The coffeehouse remains a flexible public space for socializing, studying, and remote work.
