Coconsecrating

Coconsecrating, also known as co-consecrating, is the act of performing a sacred consecration jointly by two or more clergy. The term is most commonly used in Christian contexts where apostolic succession is maintained, particularly in the ordination of bishops. In coconsecrating, multiple bishops participate in the laying on of hands and the consecration prayer, rather than a single bishop conducting the rite alone.

The principal context for coconsecrating is episcopal ordination. In the Roman Catholic Church, canon law requires that episcopal ordinations be performed by at least three bishops, with one principal consecrator and one or more co-consecrators. This arrangement emphasizes continuity within the college of bishops and the transmission of apostolic succession. In the Anglican Communion, as well as in many Eastern Orthodox communities, co-consecration is customary or preferred, though exact practices can vary by province, rite, or circumstance.

Beyond ordinations, coconsecrating can apply to the dedication of churches, altars, or other sacred objects by multiple clergy, though such instances are typically less formalized than episcopal ordinations. The practice reflects a theological emphasis on communal affirmation and shared authority in making something sacred.

Etymology derives from Latin con- (together) and consecrare (to make sacred). Across traditions, coconsecrating underscores the idea that sacred acts are carried out within a restored continuity of apostolic leadership and ecclesial unity.
