Phosphate coatings are a surface treatment applied to metal substrates, typically steel, zinc, or aluminum. They are formed by a chemical reaction between the metal surface and a phosphoric acid-based solution containing metal phosphates. This process creates a thin, crystalline layer of insoluble metal phosphates on the metal. The primary purpose of phosphate coatings is to enhance corrosion resistance and improve the adhesion of subsequent organic coatings like paint or powder coating. They also provide lubricity, which is beneficial during metal forming operations.

There are several types of phosphate coatings, categorized by the metal ion used. Zinc phosphate coatings are the most common, offering excellent corrosion protection and paint adhesion, particularly on steel. Iron phosphate coatings are simpler and often used as a pre-treatment where extreme corrosion resistance is not the primary concern, providing a good base for paint. Manganese phosphate coatings are known for their excellent wear resistance and lubricity, making them suitable for automotive components and firearms.

The application process involves cleaning the metal surface to remove oils and contaminants, followed by immersion or spraying with the phosphating solution. Rinsing is crucial to remove any residual chemicals. For enhanced performance, especially in demanding environments, a post-treatment rinse with deionized water or a passivation agent is often employed. The final coating's properties, such as thickness, crystal structure, and coverage, depend on factors like solution concentration, temperature, time, and the specific metal being treated.
