Coatings influence a range of properties, including corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and friction, as well as diffusion barriers, chemical stability, and surface energy. They can modify thermal insulation or conductivity, electrical insulation or conduction, and optical properties such as color and reflectivity.

Effectiveness depends on materials class (metals, ceramics, polymers), coating thickness and microstructure, and the deposition method (physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, electroplating, painting, or spray coating). Substrate compatibility, residual stresses, and defect density also determine performance. Applications span aerospace components, automotive parts, medical implants, electronics, and packaging.

Evaluation relies on standardized tests for adhesion, corrosion resistance, wear, hardness, and barrier performance, as well as environmental aging. Common metrics include adhesion strength, salt spray resistance, wear rate, and optical or thermal properties. Real-world performance also depends on application quality and service conditions.

Limitations include delamination from mismatched thermal expansion, coating cracking, and degradation under UV exposure or chemical attack. Cost, process compatibility, repair, and end-of-life disposal are considerations. Ongoing research seeks multi-functional, durable, and sustainable coatings with improved repairability.
