Applications are widespread: protective anti-corrosion and wear coatings in automotive and energy infrastructure; dielectric or conductive coatings in electronics; barrier and optical coatings in packaging; bioactive or drug-eluting coatings in medical implants; and functional coatings in energy storage devices and sensors.

Performance depends on adhesion, thickness control, uniformity, and the coating-substrate interface, as well as environmental resistance and cost. Common challenges include achieving strong adhesion to diverse substrates, minimizing defects, scaling deposition processes, and addressing environmental and health concerns associated with solvents and emissions.

Trends include smart, self-healing, and stimuli-responsive coatings, as well as nano-structured and thin-film architectures. Standards from ISO and ASTM govern measurement of thickness, adhesion, corrosion resistance, and hardness, guiding qualification and quality control in manufacturing.
